2018 Ford Mustang convertible revealed

Just days after the reveal of the facelifted Mustang coupe, Ford has unveiled its updated and restyled convertible version with the same aesthetic tweaks and mechanical enhancements as the hardtop.

Next year’s Ford Mustang convertible will wear the same front fascia as its coupe sibling, with new-look LED headlights and tweaked grille, as well as an updated bonnet to incorporate wider air vents and a restyled front bumper with a wider looking chin.

From the rear, the 2018 model will sport new LED tail-lights, while V8 versions will be distinguished by quad-exhaust tips surrounding a blacked-out rear diffuser, rather than the body colour-matched aerodynamics of the outgoing model.

Bent-eight Mustangs will also receive an active exhaust option, which changes engine and exhaust noise depending on revs, and all facelifted versions will also benefit from new wheel design options with up to 12 different rim styles on offer.

No changes were made to the Mustang convertible’s electric folding fabric roof, which carries over from the previous version, but Ford has fiddled with the 5.0-litre V8 that powers the GT.

Ford is promising a “thoroughly reworked” eight-pot with more power and an increased redline, but has not yet divulged to what extent. In its current guise, the V8 version produces 306kW/530Nm.

Transmission tweaks will upgrade six-speed manual gearboxes, while self-shifting Mustangs will have their ratios upped from seven to 10 thanks to an all-new automatic transmission.

MagneRide suspension which “offers optimum handling”, according to Ford, is also added the options list, alongside a standard 12.0-inch customisable digital instrument display and new safety technologies including pedestrian detection and a pre-collision warning system.
